For all of those who have always been a bit different and look back to the old ages and think how cool it would be to have your own Cabinet of Curiosities; I have found the perfect spot in Amsterdam & online if you can’t make it. This is my favorite store since the day they opened in 2006.
If you have no idea on what a “cabinet of curiosities” is:
A cabinet of curiosities was an encyclopedic collection in RenaissanceEurope. You could categorize the objects included as belonging to natural history , geology, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, works of art (including cabinet paintings) and antiquities. A tiny microcosmos.
The Otherist is also the ideal place to get a cool present or souvenir that is a “tikje anders” (a tat different), like we would say in the Netherlands.
When you walk in to the store you feel like you have walked into professor Kirk his house (The chronicles of Narnia) with a modern twist.
The owners have made it their mission to travel the globe to bring to the heart of amsterdam what they consider “the other” unique, one of a kind artifacts in combination with the finding of a great group of stunning artists and designers.
What treasures are we talking about?
A whole range of things going from modern day design into the curious Victorian ages.
There is no other way to describe it then: for you to see it by yourself either in store or online.
